Artist Statement:
I really wanted to explore the fascinating industries of fashion and fashion photography. They go hand in hand and are both very mysterious and very exclusive. Looking at how both of these became a huge part of society and pop culture, with the beginning of using celebrities to influence people. Even though they are still unattainable and very discreet, I understand and respect them even more,

Cover Letter:
The fashion photography and even just the fashion industry have always fascinated me. In my opinion it is one of the hardest industries to get into. When I started researching I knew I was going to find many of the influences that fashion photography brought to society and fashion. But I did not expect that fashion photography came first, before the actual fashion industry. This is probably my most important discovery as it shows how influential it was. The swinging 60s was also a very fun era to look into, as well as exploring more Annie Leibovitz and Bill Cunningham whom I now admire even more than I did before. This whole process really made me love this genre of photography a lot more, and it might be something I would want to explore in the future.

Process Reflection #1:
I have read multiple photography books as well as fashion books from exhibits. Also a big amount of going through magazines, introduced me to fashion photography. At Galloway I plan to speak to Ms. Hall, because she has studied photography. I will first ask her:” who is your favorite fashion photographer and why? The most important questionI will ask her is: “ who do you think was or is the most influential fashion photographer, that has changed and developed the whole genre? I will possibly speak to Mr. Curtis for the history component. I will first ask him: “Has photography helped document history?” And the most important question I will ask him is; “ Do you see a difference in how people view wars or other traumatic events when photography didn’t exist versus when it did?” Externally I want to communicate with Marina Chen who is a photographer based in LA. She will have intel on being at a shoot whether its fashion or not and will be able to answer my questions. I will first ask her: “ Do you think fashion photography is necessary composing of a model and a set?” And the most important question that I will ask her is: “ Do you think fashion photography is influenced by any genre and vice versa?” The next questions that will help me with the evolution of my project are: “ What makes a photograph a fashion photograph?, How did the vision of the genre change? And did the fashion industry influence change with fashion photography?. My idea seems refined enough since I am now only focusing on the evolution of fashion photography. Because of that choice I have to research more about the fashion industry and specific fashion photographers. I also need insight from someone that works or has worked close to the fashion industry.

It is valuable to my project as it can help me introduce the subject in a smooth
and intelligent way. I will be able to reference important turning points in history and it helps fill some plot holes.

Process Reflection #2:
I have done more research, my draft is definitely not complete, but I have a pretty good idea of what I want to say and teach. I would say I have a very detailed outline in my mind of what my full draft looks like but, I still need to implement more detailed questions about society. When I started I knew that fashion photography was and still is very influential in the fashion, photography and even commercial industries but, it influences society way more and vice versa. I need people to understand that this specific style of image creating is not a small part of an art it is way bigger than that, it is a way to report history, a way for people to express themselves, it was what social media tries to be before these times and so much more. It is also very versatile and has evolved so much over the years. The artifact is another story, that I have a harder time figuring out what I could do. I could take pictures exploring the genre through time on my own. I could just find older magazine pictures. Because an interactive artifact would be a little complicated to do with this subject. I might try talking to some of my teachers or my excursion mentor to give me some ideas. From this point on I really need to focus on my artifact and also refine my research a tiny bit. I will also need to finish my expert conversations.

Project Narrative:
When I first started researching my ideas were too wide, doing a project on the evolution of photography was to big and wouldn't have been as interesting because it was not precise enough. Therefore I decided to explore the genre of photography that was the most mysterious and out of reach to me: fashion photography, I found myself to be extremely fascinated. I read articles, magazines and even a book about famous photographer: Annie Leibovitz. But what was most interesting was than including society in the question and how they both influence each other. Over the years pop culture has been highly used in fashion but fashion has also been very influenced by society and ordinary people as the decades changed. |
